Self led Walking Holidays
Self led walking holidays are the best way to see Cornwall at your own pace without the worries of organizing your tour. If you enjoy walking independently with the freedom to stop for a break where and when you like and just want to concentrate on the fantastic scenery, this is probably the holiday for you.
With our self led walking holidays in Cornwall, there is no need to worry about choosing and booking your accommodation, carrying heavy backpacks, selecting the best route or even what to do on those rainy days when you just don’t fancy another day on the trail. We take care of everything so that you can concentrate on enjoying what you came for, the beautiful Cornish landscapes. We even offer transfers at the beginning and end of your walk, so you don't have to worry about getting anywhere.
If you prefer to organize everything yourself but don’t want to be weighed down with bags, we also offer a baggage transfer service. Read more on our baggage transfer service.
How do they work?
Western Discoveries takes care of everything. We book your accommodation, provide you with an information pack containing maps, routes, local information and our own restaurant recommendations, transfer your luggage and plan all of the details.
1. We find out what kind of walking holiday you are interested in (coast paths, moors, towns and villages for example – see our suggested itineraries for a few ideas), how long you want to stay and when you would like to come.
2. We come up with a Cornwall walking holiday itinerary based on what you want to see and how far you want to walk each day.
3. We book your accommodation in our favourite B&B’s and hotels on your route and send out an information pack.
4. You arrive at your start location in Cornwall (this can be a B&B organized by us, or a location near to the trail start, organized by yourselves). We drop you off on the trail if necessary and you leave your baggage with us.
5. You enjoy a splendid day walking, arrive at your comfortable accommodation where your baggage will be waiting and relax. You then visit a nearby restaurant (we offer recommendations).
6. The next day you head out after breakfast and enjoy more of the same.
7. Everyday we transfer your baggage to the next night’s accommodation.
8. At the tour end we offer a drop off service to local centres and transport terminals.
Where do we operate?
We offer self led walking holidays in West and Central Cornwall.
Western Discoveries is based on the Lands End peninsula, just north of Penzance and it is in this region that we offer our walking holidays. We have an intimate knowledge of the area, its intricacies and temperaments and also consider it to be the most beautiful in Cornwall. To offer walking holidays in North and East Cornwall would not adhere to our local knowledge ethos.
Most walkers prefer to follow the magnificent southwest coast path on their walking holidays in Cornwall. We offer holidays as far up the north coast as Padstow and along the south coast to Falmouth. These are our extremeties and are usually only included as part of a walking holiday extending out from our normal operating region. Most of our tours are based around the Lands End peninsula, the Lizard, the north coast up to Newquay, Camborne and surrounds, Hayle/St Ives and the south coast up to Falmouth.
Click here to see a full list of our routes along the southwest Cornish coast path.

In this region you will find all of the ecologies and features that have made Cornwall famous, with the added bonus of a wilder and more distant feel than is present in East and North Cornwall. The high cliffs and tumbled granite blocks of the north coast give way to quiet, delicate coves on the south coast, with large stretches of beautiful unspoilt moorland in between. The Lands End peninsula contains more stone monuments and quoits than anywhere else in the county and the Camborne/Redruth region is at the centre of Cornish mining heritage.
If you are looking for a self led walking holiday in Cornwall, the beauty of West Cornwall more than compensates for the short time extra that you will spend travelling to reach the region. This is a land of myths and legends, breath taking beauty and intimate history.
What’s included?
All of our walking holidays in Cornwall are designed to suit you as an individual. If you want a fast paced walk and simple accommodation, we can do that. If you want a relaxing walk and a comfortable guesthouse, we can do that too. In general we find that most walkers want a little comfort at night, a good restaurant with hearty food and cosy atmosphere and a welcoming pub to stop off in along the way. So here we have listed what is included in many customers preferred options.
Accommodation
We are walkers ourselves and we know that the end of a long day you want a warm welcome and a comfortable bed. That is why we use B&Bs, hotels and guesthouses that we have carefully selected and importantly, visited ourselves. These are chosen for their access from our walking routes, their quality and their friendly atmosphere. They are typically family run, have en-suite rooms and a relaxed atmosphere.
In the case that your accommodation lies more than a kilometre from the chosen route (as stated on the itinerary) we will provide transport between the accommodation and the trail.

Meals
The preferred option for many walkers is bed and breakfast. This is typically full English or continental and is provided in the accommodation. We can organize packed lunches through your guesthouse/hotel but many customers prefer to stop en route and enjoy our suggested pubs and cafes (or even to take their own packed lunches). Evening meals are served either in your accommodation or in nearby restaurants, and we will recommend restaurants for each night’s location.

Walking in West Conwall
West Cornwall offers you dramatic coast, unspoilt moorland and golden beaches. Turquoise seas swirl around blocks of granite as old as time itself and old mine buildings haunt the land.
