Sennen to Marazion for standard walkers: 2 days
Distance: 21 miles
Av. daily distance: 10.5 miles
Difficulty: Moderate but with several steep hills
Price: £220 for 2 days/ 3 nights*
A short break exploring the mighty cliffs and crystal clear waters of Southwest Cornwall. The walk takes you through two very different landscapes; the wild cliffs and tiny coves of the West and Southwest coast and then the fascinating towns and ports of Mounts Bay.
Passing by Lands End, Porthcurno (the Minack open air theatre), Mousehole, Newlyn and Penzance, there are many highlights, but it is always the scenery that steals the show. With granite headlands and outcrops, steep sided valleys and golden sands, this is a superb way to spend a short break.
Day 1
Start: Sennen
Finish: Treverven (no local pub/restaurant but transfers to nearby Mousehole are easily arranged)
Distance: 9 miles
Time walking: 5 hours excluding breaks
Difficulty: Quite difficult due to the frequent hills (these can be demanding going both up and down).
Highlights: Mill Bay, Porthcurno and the Minack Theatre, Penberth and Porthgwarra cove.
Beginning on the West coast, the walk heads round Lands End, on to the spectacular southwest coastline and on to the sheltered waters of Newlyn. High empty cliff tops with only a sparse covering of low grass and hardy gorse give way to open bays and sheltered valleys before the busy harbours of Mounts Bay.
The waters are the clearest you will find in Cornwall and the few beaches en route are just as spectacular. Porthcurno and Porthchapel are real gems and worth stopping off in. It is a common part of the coast to observe seals and basking sharks (summer time only) so keep your eyes open.
Well known spots such as the outdoor Minack Theatre and Lands End are surpassed by the natural beauty and it is no wonder that many retired authors and artists choose to make this region their home.
Day 2
Start Point: Treverven
Finish Point: Marazion
Distance: 12 miles
Time walking: 5 hours excluding breaks
Difficulty: Moderate to easy. There is one serious climb between Lamorna and Mousehole and the rest is over flat well surfaced path.
Highlights: Lamorna Cove, St Loy, Mousehole, St Michael's Mount.
Beautiful and luxuriant coves separate the high cliffs of the Southwest coast before the path runs into a very different scene. Through streets and around the harbours of Penzance, Newlyn, Mousehole and Marazion, this walk takes you by the developed harbour and market towns on Mounts Bay.
There is plenty of time to investigate these historically rich towns and enjoy the comforts that they offer. Cafes, restaurants, bars and shops are easily accessible and it is worth hunting for a quiet corner in which to sit and watch life hurrying by. Don’t be fooled into thinking that these are large and frantic towns though. They are busy but they maintain just a few small central streets where commerce concentrates.
The coastline is characterized by sheltered waters and rocky beaches and the long sandy expanses of Long Rock and Marazion beaches finishing with St Michael’s Mount (the perfect end to this Sennen to Marazion walking holiday).
*Price per person based on two people sharing a room. A supplement may apply for those who require a room for one person only.
*Price includes: bed and breakfast, baggage transfers, information packs, advice and support, inital and ultimate transfers.
A Marazion walking holiday is the best way to explore nearby St Michael's Mount, Penzance, Porthcurno and Mousehole.
